New crosswalks, streetlights on list of West Columbia improvements

Have you noticed some improvements to the streets in West Columbia recently?

City Administrator Brian Carter issued a Mid-Year Report of the progress of the city’s redevelopment plan to West Columbia City Council, Tuesday (March 1.)

“We’ve added crosswalks,” Carter said, to enhance pedestrian safety. He noted that pedestrian crosswalks have been installed at Leaphart and Meeting streets, Court Avenue and State Street, Spring Street and State Street and on Norfolk Street. There are also crosswalks at Meeting and Sunset and one on Alexander Road.

In addition to the crosswalks, Carter said almost 70 new streetlights have been added on Meeting Street into the Triangle City area of West Columbia.

Carter also said the city teamed with the West Columbia Beautification Foundation for a landscaping project at 12th and Meeting streets.

Another addition included promotional “Face and Places” banners with images of West Columbia citizens and business owners on them.
A sidewalk on Center Street is also being planned.

Some of the improvements were funded with grants from the SC Department of Transportation, Carter said.
