Rain delays Airport state final, Gray Collegiate outcome

By Thomas Grant Jr.

The bad weather Tuesday affected both Airport baseball and Gray Collegiate softball opening games in their respective Class 4A finals.

The Eagles waited a day to face Seneca on the road for Game One of the Class 4A final. Game Two is scheduled for Thursday back in West Columbia.

Airport is seeking its first state title in five tries and are 5-0 this post-season.

In the case of the Lady War Eagles, they were unable to complete Game One of their softball final with York. Play was called to start the Bottom 7th with Gray Collegiate trailing at home 2-1.

A 2-run homer by the Lady Cougars’ Kayla Johnson in the Top 3rd to answer Maliah Wright’s RBI single in the second inning was the difference in the game.

The game was scheduled to resume Wednesday at York, with Game Two following afterwards. If the field is unplayable, the two teams will return to West Columbia to complete Game One.

Gray Collegiate entered the series having won 14 straight post-season games.

Both Airport and Gray Collegiate had players selected to All-State teams. Hunter Epps and Brice Gillette were both selected to the S.C. Baseball Coaches Association Class 4A team, but the Class 3A/4A roster for the All-Star Game.

Aspen Boulware was the lone selection from the Lady War Eagles to the S.C. Coaches Association of Women’s Sports Class 4A team. She was joined by Airport’s Avery Ingram.
