Airport High School will soon see some new security upgrades that will include covered walkways and a new fire alarm system, according to reports received at the Lexington 2 Board meeting November 15.

The board also approved a contract to replace two HVAC rooftop units at the school.

The contract for the fire alarm system totaled $587,185. Precision Fire Solutions was low bidder. A contract of $129,844 with low bidder ASAP Mechanical was approved for the rooftop units.

Enclosing walkways was recommended by Jumper, Carter and Sease Architects as part of the schematics for campus security at Airport High School.

The board also approved a recommendation accepting an insurance settlement of $844,305.69 for the fire damage at Airport High School’s 700 Wing.

Improvements for Brookland-Cayce High School were also approved.

The board approved a contract to install a new rooftop HVCA Unit and fire alarm strobes over the proposed Health and Fitness area. New strobes will also be installed at the future science labs. The contract with Thompson Turner Construction totaled $109,283.

Bids are now being accepted for new weight room equipment at Brookland-Cayce High School. The administration was advised to proceed with the purchase so long as it does not exceed $60,000.

Some of the district’s new equipment won’t cost anything. The board approved a request to accept a donation from D&T Steel of two portable welding machines for the district’s welding program.

The board also agreed to a recommendation to widen driveways to the Busbee Creative Art Academy after school officials reported traffic problems.

The board received an update on the Oasis program, and the Advanced Elementary Program, which provides gifted and talented resources for students.

Lexington Two’s newly elected board members were sworn in and officers selected during a special meeting held earlier this month after the November 6 elections.

The newest board members, Christina Rucker and J.M. “Bud” Summers, along with returning member Linda Alford-Wooten, took the oath of office. During that meeting, Bill Bingham was elected board chair, Kevin Key vice-chair, and Rucker secretary.
