West Columbia Post 79 opened South Carolina American Legion League III play Monday at Brookland-Cayce High School.
After non-league losses to Rock Hill Post 34 and Sumter Post 15, West Columbia rebounded with an 8-3 win over Chapin/Newberry Post 193/24.
Fresh off leading Airport to the Class 4A title, the trio of Hunter Epps, Brice Gillette and Landon Jeffcoat helped West Columbia take a 3-0 lead in the Bottom 1st. After leadoff walks, Jeffcoat laid down a bunt single to score Epps.

With the bases loaded, Gillette scored on an RBI walk by Logan Gadberry. Jeffcoat then scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Colby Reynolds.
Post 79 added three more runs in the Bottom 2nd. Jeffcoat had an RBI single during which an error allowed Gillette to score on the same play. Miller Harrelson followed with an RBI sacrifice fly.
Chapin/Newberry Post 193/24 got on the board in the third inning. An RBI double by Raleigh Salters of Dutch Fork off starter Rylan Bullis made it 6-1.

West Columbia Post 79’s Cooper Dyer
In the fourth, Godfrey replaced Bullis with two outs and the bases loaded. Bobby Gummore scored a run with a fielder’s choice.
The fifth inning saw Post 79 pinch runner Wyatt Bowen score off a wild pitch. Epps followed with an RBI double to put West Columbia up 8-2.
Chapin/Newberry loaded the bases in the Top 6th. A walk by Jaydon Glenn scored Jake Peterson, but Epps entered the game in relief and recorded strikeouts on three of the final four outs.
