A large crowd gathered Thursday evening as the Christmas tree at the Cayce Municipal Complex was illuminated and thousands of holiday lights were switched on, officially ushering in the Christmas season in Cayce.

“I think this is the largest turnout ever,” said Cayce Mayor Elise Partin.

Cayce’s 49th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony was sponsored by the Woman’s Club of Cayce, which asked attendees to bring non-perishable food items and canned goods to support the Scooter Scott Project and God’s Helping Hands as part of the 23rd Annual Cayce Cares initiative.

Ann Malpass, event chair, welcomed the crowd and thanked Paula Melton Pinner, president of the Woman’s Club of Cayce, for organizing the event.

Members of the Woman’s Club served hot chocolate while Santa and Mrs. Claus (Tim and Frances Shealy) greeted children eager to share their Christmas wishes.

Middle school musicians from Busbee Creative Arts Academy performed holiday music, and a Busbee dance troupe entertained the crowd with festive routines.

The program also featured remarks from Rev. Tom Wall of Cayce United Methodist Church and Erika Glover of WLTX-TV, which filmed the event.
