The River Bluff High School Gators baseball team won the 5A State Championship May 24 with a 9 – 7 victory over the Blythewood High School Bengals.
The Bengals scored all seven of their runs in the first two innings, before Andrew Vaughn came in as a relief pitcher and locked the game down for the Gators.
The game was tied at 7 in the seventh inning before the Gators squeezed out two runs. The first was with runners on first and third. A wild pitch allowed the score, and a move to third base. The Gator’s ninth point then came on a grounder to third where the runner beat the throw to home plate.
It is the first baseball championship for River Bluff.
