After a walk-off loss to Lexington Post 7 to open the season, West Columbia Post 79 rebounded with two straight victories.
It avenged the season-opening loss to Lexington on June 5 in a 5-2 victory at Brookland-Cayce High School. Post 7 took an early lead in the top of the first, then Connor Wood hit a 2-run homer in the bottom half of the inning.
Catcher Price Jackson had an RBI double in the fourth and hit an RBI single in the sixth followed by a double by Thomas Donaldio.
Hunter Epps of Airport pitched 6 2/3 innings but left the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh inning. This time, Jeremy Powell struck out University of South Carolina commit Brandon Cromer Jr. for the final out.
West Columbia found itself in another contest which got close at the end Monday against Richland Post 215. It jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, before Richland scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
An RBI sacrifice bunt by Wood, who went 2-3 with 2 runs driven in for the second straight game, proved critical for Post 79. Post 215 loaded the bases with no outs on starter Logan Gadberry and reliever Preston Coggins.
Epps entered the game and retired the next two batters. He then gave up back-to-back RBI walks before striking out Evan Smith to end the game.
