Area Teams Move Closer to State Finals

By Thomas Grant Jr.

A return trip to the state final came a step closer for Gray Collegiate and head coach Kevin Heise.

The War Eagles played host to Heise’s former team and Region 4-4A rival Brookland-Cayce last Saturday. Much like the two regular-season meetings, they did not allow a goal in a 4-0 shutout victory.

Noah Mitchell, Jason Gonzalez, Andres Campo, and Gavin Greer also scored for Gray Collegiate. The contest also saw both teams combine for 23 fouls.

Gray Collegiate played host to May River Wednesday in the third round.

Just before heavy rained wreaked havoc on the playoff schedules, the Airport baseball team

earned a berth in the Class 4A Lower State’s Final Four.

The Eagles defeated May River 11-2 Saturday to claim the Lower State B bracket. They now

await the winner of the A bracket between Gilbert and North Augusta, which was decided Wednesday.

Just days after hitting a walk off RBI single against the Sharks, Daniel Butts pounded them

again with four RBI. This included a 3-run home run as part of a 6-run 1st inning.

Landon Jeffcoat went 3-4 with three RBI and Hunter Epps allowed just two hits in five innings for

the win.

On Tuesday, the Lady War Eagles defeated Darlington 8-0 to claim the Lower State District A title. Maddox Long broke open the game in the Bottom 3rd with a grand slam home run.

Kaylan Boudreau also had a two-run homer and Makenzie Sease had seven strikeouts and allowed just one hit on the mound.

It was the 11th consecutive post-season win for the Lady War Eagles. They will now await the winner of Hartsville/Gilbert in the Lower State District B final.

Airport was still awaiting its Lower State District C matchup at Colleton County which has been delayed due to weather. It rebounded from an opening-round loss to the Lady Cougars with a 12-0 win in four innings over Hilton Head Island.

The 1-2 order of the Lady Eagles’ lineup of Avery Ingram and Ariana Feliciano had back-to-back home runs. Ingram belted a two-run homer to make it 10-0 and Feliciano followed with an inside-the-park home run.

Pitcher Addie Maynor struck out five in four hitless innings for Airport.
