Quarterback Andrew Frick did his part for Brookland-Cayce last Friday with three touchdown passes.
The Bearcats still needed a 90-yard kickoff return TD by Isaiah Daniels in the third quarter to hold off Lower Richland 28-21. It was the Region 4-3A opener for both teams.
Frick finished 15-19 passing for 237 yards. Bennett Plane had six receptions for 84 yards and two touchdowns.
Sophomore defensive lineman Ethan Johnson had 11 tackles, followed by Antwoine Lawson with 10 tackles for Brookland-Cayce (2-4, 1-0).
In the same region, archrival Airport was defeated 48-28 by Swansea.
In Class 5A, Gray Collegiate opened Region 5-4A play with its second shutout win of the season.
The 41-0 win over Spring Valley saw quarterback Xavier Wright complete 9-15 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown. Running back Jayshon Singleton rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns.

Armstong named to Shrine Bowl
Gray Collegiate Academy will now have two players in the 90th annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas on Dec. 18 in Spartanburg.
Offensive lineman Jack Armstrong, a commit to The Citadel, was named as a replacement. He joins wide receiver Royce Williamson on the Sandlappers’ roster.
Gators win opener
River Bluff scored 10 straight points in the final 12 minutes for the 34-25 win over Chapin.
The Eagles needed just three plays to take an early lead in the first minute. Quarterback Tyler Black found Charlie Todd for a long completion from the Chapin 10 to set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Charlie Howell.
River Bluff answered 25 seconds left with a 99-yard kickoff return TD by Darius Carter to tie the game. Chapin reclaimed the lead at 9-7 following an errant snap out of the endzone to punter Liam Flynn.
The Gators went ahead 14-9 with 3:01 left in the first quarter. Once again, it was Carter with the touchdown on a 71-yard pass reception from quarterback Davis Taylor.

A 33-yard field goal by Flynn to open the second quarter extended River Bluff’s lead to 17-9. Chapin answered with a 14-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown by Kingston Bowers to make it 17-15.
As time expired, the Eagles’ Beckham Diimmler hit a 27-yard field goal to put his team up 18-17 at halftime. Late in the third quarter, River Bluff pulled off a successful fake punt as Flynn threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Reece Huffstetler.
The PAT put the Gators ahead 24-18 with 1:25 left in the third quarter. Just 13 seconds later, Black connected with Conner Finney for an 80-yard touchdown to put the Eagles back on top 25-24 following the extra point.
River Bluff opened the fourth quarter with a 3-play, 46-yard scoring drive to take the lead for good. Brayden Moore found Brady Barrineau for a 30-yard touchdown to make it 31-25.
Chapin was held scoreless in the fourth and Flynn added a 22-yard field goal with 1:34 left in the game. River Bluff returns to action Oct. 16 against 4-time defending Class 5A champion Dutch Fork.
NCA now 7-0
The perfect season for Northside Christian Academy continued last Friday.
Quarterback B.J. Suits rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns in the 27-6 win over Westminster School of Augusta. The win improved the Crusaders to 7-0 overall, 3-0 in SCISA Region I-3A.
For the season, Suits has rushed for 970 yards and has accounted for 20 of his team’s 30 rushing touchdowns. He’s also thrown for 665 yards and seven touchdowns.
