In a collaborative effort with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), the City of West Columbia has undertaken measures to enhance safety and elevate the overall quality of life for residents. The focus of this initiative was the establishment of a uniformed 25-mile-per-hour speed limit on the north side of Sunset Blvd, stretching from N. Lucas Street to McSwain Drive.
The genesis of this safety enhancement stemmed from the advocacy of a local Westover Acres/Saluda Gardens resident, Rachel Campbell. Recognizing the need for a consistent speed limit, Ms. Campbell reached out to SCDOT, bringing the matter to the attention of the City Council. The unanimous approval of this recommendation occurred during the August 2023 Special Council Meeting.
To effectively communicate and enforce the updated speed limits, City Staff diligently replaced speed limit signs in the designated area on Monday, November 20, 2023. Residents and commuters are urged to adhere to the new speed limit and exercise caution while navigating through these areas.
Mayor Tem Miles expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “I am glad that there is now one consistent speed limit for these neighborhoods. This will make the area safer for pedestrians and drivers.”
Councilpersons from various districts echoed the sentiment:
- District 3 Councilperson George Crowe emphasized the multifaceted benefits of lower speed limits, citing research that indicates a decline in accidents and a significant reduction in high-end speeding.
- District 6 Councilperson Jimmy Brooks highlighted the potential for increased safety for both pedestrians and drivers through the reduction of speed limits.
- District 7 Councilperson Sarah Mattern extended gratitude to Rachel Campbell for her proactive approach to addressing the speeding issue in the neighborhood. Mattern acknowledged Campbell’s collaboration with SCDOT, emphasizing the collective effort to encourage responsible driving habits.
The City of West Columbia’s commitment to fostering a safer and more secure environment for its residents is evident in these measures. The implementation of a uniformed speed limit reflects a dedication to the well-being of the community and a proactive stance towards mitigating potential risks on the roadways.
