Hattie’s View: Change for legacies sake

My, my , my. Back to school already? Where did our summer go? As I write this column two things are on my mind.

By Ellen Coffey

How we are changing as a society. How those changes might affect our culture for generations to come.

Each new school year brings changes for young parents, soccer moms, a new driver in the family, younger siblings jockeying over the now vacant bedroom.

Only child? Freshman college student first-time empty nester syndrome.

Aging folks?

Enter, the silent generation. Bathtub aches and pains?

So you really want to have that old bathtub removed and a nice, new, step-in shower installed in one day?

The rep comes to your home, at your convenience, shows you his company’s promotion from his laptop. He explains your payment options. You choose the color and style, make decided payment arrangements or method and sign the agreement.

Deal done. Happy customer.

Satisfying results. The old tub is replaced with the walk-in shower.

A change for the better.

Speaking of change, here’s a new one for you.

Now there’s Pickle Ball.

Seems older folks, living near the pickleball courts, in several states, are so stressed at the noise, which they say sounds like gunshots, they are making a life change. As a last resort, they are selling their homes. Really? Talk about change.

Moving forward :

Just living to old age means change. But what if we could tear out our old selfish, worldly personality and choose how we want our new self to be? What if we could sit down with the child in us and plan our conversion from our old self to the born-again child. Big change, huh?

Since no one knows the future, but by faith, and moral values , we sit down with a financial planner, update a will, and provide sufficient insurance, This may even set the course for those who follow.

Leave a legacy.

A legacy is not necessarily an inheritance or the material value of the things left behind.

A legacy by definition is something of value handed down from an ancestor or predecessor, to a relative or mentee.

With that said, everyone has a legacy to receive and disperse.

Emails, the pics saved or copied, reveal the truth.

Facebook posts attest to who a person really is and what they really pass down to those left behind. To clean up the past some folks may even need to change their identity and get in the witness protection program.

Ha ha.

Seriously, I still get postcards from a friend who got into witchcraft and changing her identity saved her life.

She says she’s fine.

My Grandma Hattie preached “What’s in the well comes up in the bucket.”

As we know today you can’t escape who you really are. Now we have proof. It’s called DNA.

The same test could reveal who you aren’t. You may not actually be who you thought you were. Hmmm

Aww, I’ve said enough already. Be the best you can be.

Maybe you don’t need to change anything, change will just happen. Remember it’s about leaving a legacy, y’all
