Offense heats up for Airport baseball, softball

Since defending Class 4A champion Airport had its 15-game winning streak snapped by Aiken, it has built up another string of wins.

In the process of earning head coach Casey Bradwell his 100th career win, the Eagles who run off five straight victories.

It started March 18 with a 3-0 shutout of Aiken to avenge the previous loss. Pitcher Daniel Butts struck out 10 batters and Justin Sightler had a 3-run homer.

Airport then swept South Aiken and Midland Valley to remain a game behind Gray Collegiate Academy for first place in Region 5-4A.

The War Eagles were riding an 8-game winning streak entering Monday’s home game against South Aiken.  They are scheduled to start a 2-game series with Airport Friday.

SOFTBALL

Airport was involved in a pair of high-scoring games last week.

On March 24, it faced Wagner-Salley in a non-region contest. The two teams combined for 44 runs, 31 hits and nine errors as the Lady Eagles prevailed 25-19.

Addie Maynor 3-3 with six RBI, including two home runs. Jayden Osbourne drove in five runs, three scoring off an error, and Abigail Gartman had 3 RBI.

Airport led 20-9 when Wagener-Salley scored 10 runs in the bottom sixth inning. The Lady Eagles answered with five runs in the seventh, three off the Osbourne grounder and error.

The bats stayed hot two nights later against archrival Brookland-Cayce. Ariana Feliciano had a 2-run homer and Mackenzie Stephenson also drove in three runs in the 14-2 victory in five innings.

Maynor picked up the win on the mound, allowing four hits and striking out three batters.

Airport stands in fifth place in Region 5-4A. Defending Class 4A champion Gray Collegiate Academy remains undefeated at 17-0 overall, 7-0 in the region. Last Thursday, Mackenzi Bradley hit a grand slam and Payton Hendrix had seven strikeouts in a 12-0 win over Gilbert.
