Koon's Watch
Places are opening up again, vacations are back on and you’re ready to head out of town.
Before you do that, let’s take a moment to talk about vacation safety.
Sure, it’s a lot of fun to share your adventurous vacation photos on social media. But, what if those photos get into the wrong hands? When you share that you’re away, you’re letting others know your home is unoccupied; giving them to the perfect opportunity to break in.
Sharing your memorable moments with your friends and family is oftentimes a large part of the vacation experience, but I’m encouraging you to wait until you’re back home and your house is no longer vacant before you do.
Let your trusted neighbors know that you’re going out of town so that they can keep an eye on your property. If you have dog walkers and plant waterers coming by, let your neighbors know so they don’t suspect suspicious activity. You can also have your mail held by the USPS while you’re away and resume service when you return. Reschedule any package deliveries that may get dropped off while on vacation so they’re not sitting around for package thieves.
Keep security cameras and alarm systems on if you have them. Using porch lights and a light on inside your home is a great way to discourage burglars as well. Unused vehicles sitting in the driveway? Unplugging the batteries before you leave will often thwart car thieves. Taking steps to protect your property can prevent crimes of opportunity.
Enjoy your vacation with peace of mind. Share your stories when you arrive home.
