January 23, 2025 – The portrait of Sen. Nikki Setzler was unveiled on Wednesday during a ceremony held in the Chamber of the South Carolina Senate. The honor was marked by a special moment as Setzler’s nine grandchildren unveiled the portrait, which will now hang on the upper wall of the Senate’s three-story chamber.
“I absolutely loved serving in the South Carolina Senate,” said Setzler, who served an impressive 48 years before retiring in 2024. Representing most of Lexington County in District 26, Setzler retired as the longest-serving member in the history of the South Carolina Senate. The portrait was painted by renowned artist Joseph Q. Daily.
During the ceremony, Setzler expressed his gratitude to his colleagues, reflecting on years of cooperation and bipartisanship. He emphasized that his primary goal throughout his career was to serve the people of South Carolina to the best of his ability.
Throughout his tenure, Setzler worked tirelessly to advance initiatives in education, economic development, employment, healthcare, tourism, recreation, and conservation.
The event began with a prayer led by Rev. Charles Jackson of Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia. Several senators shared heartfelt memories and anecdotes about working with Setzler, highlighting his dedication and leadership. Among those who spoke were Sens. Thomas Alexander, Harvey Peeler, Darrell Jackson, Shane Massey, Brad Hutto, Vincent Sheheen, and former Sen. John Land.
The portrait’s unveiling celebrates Setzler’s remarkable legacy and lifelong commitment to public service.
