BC boys, NCA girls stay undefeated in region play

Region 4-4A play has gone perfectly well so far for the Brookland-Cayce boys basketball team.

The sixth-ranked Bearcats are off to a 5-0 start following Tuesday’s 77-42 home win over Gilbert. R.J. Weeks scored 14 points and A.J. Edwards had 10 as Brookland-Cayce (12-4) jumped out to an 18-4 lead at the end of the first quarter to take control of the game.

A week earlier, the Bearcats upended fifth-ranked Gray Collegiate 54-45 on the road. It was an emotional win that head coach Robert Wells said his team “played for the entire school district” and “the community.”

He also cautioned his team prior to travelling two nights later to Aiken.

“There’s not going to be a letdown in this locker room,” Wells said.

The game came down to the final seconds with the Bearcats pulling off the 51-49 win.

With nine seconds left, Carter Jackson took the inbounds pass in his backcourt. He then drove to the free-throw line and pulled up for the jumper with 2.1 seconds left for the victory.

The next three games will be a test of will for Brookland-Cayce. It travels to co-leader North Augusta Friday, then faces Class 5A Division I top-ranked Ridge View at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the MLK Classic at Eau Claire High School.

The following day, it’s a rivalry matchup with Airport.

Following losses to North Augusta and Brookland-Cayce, Gray Collegiate evened its mark in region play after routing Airport 97-31 last Thursday and South Aiken 82-42 on Tuesday. Following Friday’s home game with Aiken, the War Eagles will face Hammond School at 1:30 p.m. at the MLK Classic.

While the Brookland-Cayce boys look to remain perfect in the region, the Lady Bearcats fell to 0-5 following the 66-35 loss to Gilbert.

In other girls region play, Gray Collegiate improved to 7-4 overall, 4-1 in the region following a 60-26 victory over Airport last Thursday and a  54-23 win Tuesday over South Aiken

The Lady Eagles dropped to 9-7 overall, 2-3 in region play following losses to Gray Collegiate and North Augusta (49-9).

Junior forward Chaelyn Tifre is averaging a double-double at 12.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Northside Christian returns to action Tuesday against Augusta Christian to start a five-game homestand.
