Bearcats begin new era under Clyburn

By Thomas Grant Jr.

This past weekend’s trip to Zemp Stadium provided a unique perspective for Brookland-Cayce football.

The matchup with Camden marked a reunion for new Bearcats’ head coach Louis Clyburn. He served as an offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at his alma mater for eight seasons.

It was also an opportunity for his new team to get an even more firsthand view of what offense they are implementing. Look for the Bearcats to employ similar multiple looks on offense from conventional to no huddle utilizing their athleticism, according to Clyburn.

Andrew Frick comes in at quarterback from basketball He brings a 6-foot 4, 235-pound frame with a strong arm to the position.

Senior Tyree Johnson and sophomore Mekhi Pringle are expected as his top targets at wide receiver. At running back, Avery King moves up from the junior varsity level and will pair with junior Bennett Plane in the backfield.

Senior My’son Jones provides versatility at tight end and backup quarterback. Center Franklin Lykes and tackle Jordan Browning will lead on both the offensive and defensive lines.

To help with implementing the offense, Clyburn has brought in G.A. Mangus as offensive coordinator. An assistant at in-state colleges the University of South Carolina, Florida and South Carolina State, Mangus shares a similar offensive philosophy as Clyburn.

The Bearcats will have three non-region games, two against Lexington County Class 5A schools, River Bluff and White Knoll. They look to return from a 4-7 season and fourth place finish in Region 4-4A under former head coach Reed Charpia.
