Brookland-Cayce in tight race for playoff spot

By Thomas Grant Jr.

The playoff race in Region 4-4A can be summed up in two parts.

At the top, Gray Collegiate Academy has placed itself in position as the team to beat. Last Friday, it completed the sweep of Lexington School District Two schools with a 62-7 win over Airport.

The War Eagles (5-2, 4-0) scored 55 points in the first half. Running back Trevon Williamson rushed for 81 yards and three touchdowns and Royce Williamson caught two touchdowns.

Both freshman Xavier Wright and Tyler Waller shared the quarterback duties. On defense, Michael Boulware had 19 tackles and senior defensive end Kaleb Holmes had five sacks.

The second region story involves the battle for the final two playoff spot. Brookland-Cayce, Gilbert and Midland Valley are in a three-way tie for third place.

The Bearcats stayed in the race with a 20-19 comeback win over Aiken on Oct. 9. Down 19-7 at halftime, quarterback Andrew Frick threw two of his three touchdowns to Bennett Plame in the second half.

Frick finished with 304 passing yards; Plane had seven receptions for 169 yards and Avery King rushed for 105 yards.

B-C (2-5, 2-2) travels to Gilbert (3-4, 2-2) Friday. This matchup had gone in favor of the home team before last season’s 50-49 loss by the Bearcats at Fort Knox.
