Hattie’s View: The cane hustler in heels

By Ellen Coffey

Meet my Grandma Hattie, a true woman of faith who talks to God and expects answers.

I often sense Grandmas protective presence while driving.

One morning a late model SUV whips out around me, partially blocking me. I hit the brakes. Whew.

A thin well dressed brunette wearing at least 4 inch heels, jumps from the vehicle and makes a beeline for yard trash piled near the road.

I see someone has recently cleared a decorative cane pole patch, near a trickling stream of water, at the property line. The lady emerges from the yard trash pile with several fresh cane poles that appear to be about 12-foot long, next she reaches into her van and reappears with a blanket and a rope for wrapping and tying down her stash. Whaaa?

Who fishes from the shore with 12-foot cane poles these days ? She’s secures her cargo, looks my way, smiles and gives me a thumbs up. Off she goes.

Did I miss something? I admit I was more than a little curious.

We haven’t fished much since our business is so time consuming.

Anyway you can’t drive around and find a cane break like in the old days.

About an hour later, I was driving down highway 378 near Lexington, when I notice a sports shop. I pull over, park, and walk in. I Introduce myself and after a bit of small talk I asked, “do folks on this side of the lake still fish from the bank with cane poles and worms?”

Mr. Charles answers, “Sure do. We sell local night crawlers, red worms and up to 14 foot natural, local cane poles.”

After looking around I thanked Mr Charles Dooley, for the soda then I headed to Zestos to grab a 2 piece chicken snack.

The following day, after running errands, I grab lunch (burgers) from What A Burger, and drove down the street to The Tackle Shop on Meeting Street. The parking lot was full of cars (not a boat in sight).

The outside of the building looked pretty much as it did decades ago. A sign hung beside the door, Deer Corn, worms, herring and (yep) cane poles sold here. Another seller of the cane hustlers product.

I needed this information to satisfy my curiosity about this savvy entrepreneur, wearing 4-inch heels while gathering her product.

God supplies our needs. “Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find.” He’s a generous God.

As A.W Tozier wrote:  “We can have as much of God as we want.” Hmmm.

I can hear my Grandma Hattie “thank God nobody got hurt. Let’s just hope that lady keeps some other shoes in her car.”

I wonder if she raises cane these days, Y’all.
