The repeat hopes of the Gray Collegiate Academy girls’ basketball team ended Saturday afternoon in Florence.
Landrum built a 13-8 lead early in the second quarter. Led by Kadance Walker-Lee, the Lady War Eagles responded with a 7-2 run to tie the game at 15-15.
The game remained tied at 17-17 at halftime as both teams struggled from the field. It continued into the second half as a combined seven points were scored in the fourth quarter.
After Diamond Tatum made 1-2 free throws, the Lady War Eagles went into a four-minute scoring drought. The Lady Cardinals capitalized with a 7-0 run to take the lead for good.
Phelps and Walker-Lee each scored to bring Gray Collegiate to within a point. Landrum answered with two open layups off long outlet passes thrown by Savannah Brown, who finished with 10 points.
Phelps finished with 12 points and Walker-Lee had 11 to lead Gray Collegiate.
“They made more shots than we did,” Lady War Eagles’ head coach Brandon Wallace said. “We missed a gang of layups around the basket which is uncharacteristic for our post players. Sometimes it happens like that.”
