Columbia Man Charged with Murder in Gaston Shooting

Lexington County deputies have arrested Johnnie Quawnetel Mack, a 34-year-old Columbia resident, in connection with the shooting death of John Darrick Rumph, 53. The incident occurred Tuesday night in Gaston.

Mack faces charges of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, as stated in the arrest warrants.

The tragic event took place in the 2400 block of Glenn Road, where Rumph was pronounced dead at the scene by Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher. According to Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon, the shooting resulted from an earlier altercation between Mack and Rumph.

“Based on interviews with witnesses, the shooting stems from an incident between Mack and Rumph earlier that evening,” Koon explained. “Mack returned to the home on Glenn Road where he fired multiple shots at Rumph.”

Rumph was fatally shot once in the upper body.

After the incident, Mack turned himself in on Thursday night. A magistrate judge denied him bond on Friday, and he is currently being held at the Lexington County Detention Center.
