Brookland-Cayce High School was the site this past Monday for a first-place showdown in American Legion League 3.
Host team West Columbia Post 79 looked to move a half-game ahead of Richland Post 215 with a victory. It was the first of two straight meetings between the two teams.
Sparked by an offense that produced 14 hits, Richland came away with a 12-2 victory in six innings. Caleb Gipson and Jeb Britt both had two hits and three RBI and Nolan Cook held West Columbia to two hits and struck out six in four innings.
Both of Post 79’s runs scored off-fielding miscues. Ken Wright came home in the Bottom 1st off an error in centerfield by Gipson and Hunter Epps of Airport scored in the third off a wild pitch.
The win improved Post 215 to 6-4 overall, 6-2 in the league. West Columbia dropped to 5-5 overall and 4-4 in the league heading into Wednesday’s rematch at A.C. Flora High School.
Lexington Post 7
With West Columbia’s loss, Lexington (4-4, 4-4) moved a ½ game out of second place in League 3. On Monday, it played host to Sumter Post 15 in a non-region game at Lexington High School.
Post 7 jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first two innings. Sumter rallied back behind two home runs and three RBI by Bryce Coulter, but Lexington added to its lead for the 15-9 win.
Lexington could tie West Columbia for second place in League 3 with a win over Orangeburg Post 4 Tuesday. After a rematch at Mirmow Field Thursday with Orangeburg, Post 7 will return to action July 8 to close out its schedule with three games, two with Richland Post 215.
Chapin/Newberry Post 193/24
Led by Maddox Floyd’s four RBI, Chapin/Newberry held off Greenwood Post 20 7-6.
On Monday, Post 193/24 looked to move into first place with a win over Golden Strip Post 271 at Hillcrest High School.
The host team jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first four innings. Chapin/Newberry got RBI from Brett Young, Cooper Raines, and Blair Moore, but ended up losing 11-4.
Chapin/Newberry (7-4, 4-3) dropped to third place behind Golden Strip (5-2, 5-2) and Easley (6-7, 6-4) entering Wednesday’s rematch at Newberry College. Post 193/24 and Post 271 will meet a third time Friday at Hillcrest High School.
