Schedules put in flux by Hurricane Helene

By Thomas Grant Jr.

Hurricane Helene did not just wreak havoc on the homes, schools, businesses and properties of the Palmetto State.

It resulted in a mass reshuffling of the Week Five schedule. While some teams were able to beat the storm’s arrival, others in the aftermath saw their respective games either postponed or cancelled altogether.

The list of postponed games:

– Trinity Collegiate School at Northside Christian (rescheduled for Oct. 18)

– Airport at South Aiken

– Gray Collegiate at North Augusta

Brookland-Cayce was able to play its Week Five game at Midland Valley last Wednesday.

The outcome was not as favorable as the Bearcats lost 42-21 to the Mustangs. After Tyrone Jackson’s touchdown run put Brookland-Cayce up 7-0, Midland Valley proceeded to score 28 unanswered points led by its ‘Prestons’ – Running backs Preston McNair, who rushed for two scores, and Preston Smith, and quarterback Preston Butler.

Brookland-Cayce got two fourth quarter touchdown passes from Drevon Dopson.

This Friday, Dopson gets to face his former team Gray Collegiate Academy. It’s the WACH 57 Sonic Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week.

An extended bye

The  unfortunate extended damage to Aiken County schools has affected Airport football.

With first South Aiken and this week’s opponent Aiken unable to play, the Eagles find themselves inactive until Oct. 11 against Gray Collegiate Academy.

Despite the inactivity coming after the Eagles posted their first win of the season, head coach Steve Fidler sees a positive from a health standpoint.

“Players always benefit health wise from an extra few days,” he said. “However, after you win and get momentum, you want to keep playing.  We are excited to get back together as a team and get back on the field.”
