Lexington, SC – US 378, also known as Sunset Boulevard, is one of the primary routes into the Town of Lexington and has seen considerable growth and increased traffic over the past several years. Over 50,000 vehicles navigate the intersection of Corley Mill Road and Sunset Boulevard daily, a volume comparable to the population of the 7th largest city in South Carolina. Corley Mill Road is also a crucial access point for River Bluff High School, several residential developments, and the Lake Murray Dam.
To address the congestion and improve traffic flow in this area, the Town of Lexington has initiated the Sunset Split project, which is the next phase of the Corley Mill Gateway project. This new phase follows the recently completed US 378 and Ginny Lane intersection improvements and the I-20 West Bound Exit Ramp improvement projects. The Sunset Split project is funded by the Town of Lexington’s local Hospitality Tax, the Corley Mill TIF District, and a provision in the Fiscal Year 2025 SC State Budget.
In August 2020, a Virtual Public Information Meeting was held, which garnered approximately 2,800 website visits and 144 comments from the community. Based on this feedback, the Town of Lexington has revised the project design to better meet the needs and concerns of its residents.
The revised design for the Sunset Split project aims to alleviate traffic congestion by separating the eastbound and westbound lanes of Sunset Boulevard and relocating Corley Mill Road and Riverchase Way. The Town of Lexington is currently seeking additional public comments on the updated project design to ensure it addresses the community’s needs effectively.
