Wofford College sophomore Zac Cowan named Pitcher of the Week (Page 106)

From the Wofford College Sports Information Office

Wofford College sophomore Zac Cowan, a graduate of Blythewood High School, earned Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

He is the second Terrier to be recognized this season as Braden Hofmeyer earned the recognition on March 4. This is also Cowan's second honor from the SoCon this season as he was tabbed pitcher of the month for March as well.

"We are incredibly proud of Zac and happy for him to receive this honor," head coach J.J. Edwards said. "His performance (April 19) at Mercer was incredible, and it's always special to see someone get recognized for their hard work paying off."

Despite getting a no-decision in Wofford's 9-2 win at Mercer to open the series, Cowan turned in the best performance yet of his career. The right-hander hurled a career-long nine innings with just one run allowed.

He surrendered six hits and only a single walk while fanning 14 batters, a new career high and the fifth most by a Terrier ever in a single game. Though not a complete game because the contest went 12 innings, Cowan was the first Terrier to pitch at least nine innings since Matthew Marchal did so against UNCG in last year's SoCon Tournament.

Cowan threw 116 pitches at an average of just over 12 per inning even with his abundance of strikeouts. The only true blemish to his ledger was a solo homer in the eighth. Otherwise, only three Bears reached second base against Cowan, one of which reached base on an error and another advancing by way of a sacrifice bunt. Outside of the homer, no one made it to third base against him.
