B-C hires new head coaches (Page 92)

This upcoming school year will see two more new head coaches at Brookland-Cayce High School.

In girls’ basketball, Jamaal Brown was hired to take over the program. A former state champion as a player at Spartanburg High School, Brown brings 17 years of coaching experience to the Lady Bearcat program.

He began his coaching career on the men’s junior college basketball level. Before that, he played college basketball at Western Kentucky and Cal-State Fullerton, then went overseas in Europe, Taiwan and the Dominican Republic and spent time in the NBA G-League with affiliate teams with the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers and Golden State Warriors.

Brookland-Cayce also hired its new head baseball coach. Matt Kline comes over from Waccamaw High School where he served as pitching coach the past three years.

A graduate of Coastal Carolina, he also served as a B-Team coach at North Myrtle Beach for two years and coached in Power Baseball South Carolina where he’s worked with college coaches and has helped numerous players into the college ranks.

Kline replaces Reed Charpia, who will remain as both athletics director and head football coach.

Back in February, Brookland-Cayce hired Cory Karl as its new competitive cheer head coach. She takes over a program which was inactive last season as cheer members received S.C. High School League approval to compete with Airport High School.

A University of South Carolina graduate, Karl spent four years at Meadow Glen Middle School where she helped start a program and led it to three winning seasons and second place at the Debbie Rogers Cheer Classic.

She took a hiatus and returned to coach at Ben Lippen School where the Lady Falcons won back-to-back SCISA Class 4A competitive cheer titles.
