As our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, do we, as American citizens, truly grasp the significance of living in this free country we call home?
To realize the magnificent vision of our Founding Fathers, generations of Americans have endured hardship, sacrifice, disappointment and war. Through perseverance, faith and ingenuity, our nation has continued to grow and prosper. While our history has not been without its challenges and imperfections, it is the sacrifices of countless men and women that have propelled America to new heights, leaving future generations to benefit from their courage and determination.
Recently, I had the privilege of meeting Skip McMillan, a retired United States Army Master Sergeant who served our country for 26 years. His patriotic spirit, proudly displayed at his home in Irmo, inspired this article.
Military service runs deep in Skip’s family. His great-grandfather served during World War I, his grandfather served in World War II, and his father served during the Vietnam War. Skip’s own military career included service in conflicts and operations throughout the Middle East. Today, he and his wife proudly have two sons serving on active duty in the United States Air Force and the United States Army.
As I learned more about Skip, I realized how similar our own family histories are.
I retired as a United States Air Force Master Sergeant after 22 years of service, including the Vietnam and Gulf wars. Like Skip, military service has been a tradition in my family. My grandfather served in World War I, my father served in World War II, and I have nephews who served in both the Air Force and Army. My oldest grandson followed that tradition by enlisting in the Air Force after high school and is currently serving our nation.
Military service truly runs deep in both of our families.
Every military career begins with a simple but profound act: raising your right hand and taking the oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. It is a solemn commitment that has been honored by generations of Americans over the past 250 years.
Countless men and women have accepted that responsibility with unwavering determination, demonstrating the highest standards of duty, honor and discipline to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today. Their sacrifices have helped ensure that future generations of American families continue to enjoy the liberty bestowed upon us by our Creator.
Duty, Honor and Country are more than words. They are enduring principles that live in the hearts of past and present American service members. Likewise, Peace Through Strength remains a proven principle that continues to guide our nation’s military.
As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, let us also remember the everyday citizens whose hard work, perseverance and love of country have helped shape this great nation. Their willingness to face challenges, overcome adversity and continue moving forward defines the American spirit.
May God bless America and keep her safe today and always.
Happy birthday to the Land of the Free, because of the Brave.
Let us celebrate 250 years—together, in proud tradition.
